Our charcoal

Density.

Our charcoal is made from a blend of two types of hardwoods:  oak and mesquite.  These woods are high density.  That means several things.  First, high density woods burn hotter than softwoods.  Second, they burn for a longer time.  Also, charcoal bags of hardwoods are smaller in size than those bags that contain softwood charcoal.

A lot of charcoal from competing brands is made with softwoods.  That charcoal ignites fast, but burns for a shorter time and produces less heat than charcoal made out of hardwoods.

Size matters.

A great bag of charcoal will have a mix of small-medium size pieces and also medium-large size pieces.   Our double screening process allows us to only pack good size pieces of charcoal in the bags.   All the very small pieces and dust are separated and used to make our briquettes.  The small-medium sized pieces will make your fire start fast and the medium-large sized pieces will make your fire last longer.

Many other competitors don't have a rigorous screening process and a lot of dust and very small particles end up in the bags.  That dust and very small pieces do not contribute to produce heat in your grill.  Those bags are messy and customers pay for the weight of those particles too.

Smoke.

Not too strong, not too light.  Our oak-mesquite blend produces a nice moderate smoke to give meats the right amount of smoky flavor.

Some of the other brands use woods that either produce very strong smoke or very little smoke.
